the nitty gritty // FAQ

are your products all-natural?

yes, our products are made with 100% natural ingredients. we exclusively select ingredients that are formulated without:  parabens, sulfates, phthalates, hormones and prostaglandins, artificial fragrances, artificial dyes, gluten, or toxic ingredients of any kind.

are your products organic?

while we can proudly claim our products to be 100% natural, we cannot say they are 100% organic because not every supplier of our natural ingredients has been certified organic.

becoming certified organic is a long and expensive process, in some cases suppliers are unable to pay all of the associated fees despite practicing sustainable agriculture.

we source ingredients solely from suppliers using environmentally-friendly practices, supporting them to achieve certification so we can one day achieve 100% certified-organic status.

are your products vegan?

yes, our entire line is vegan with a few exceptions:

·      suds face wash : contains raw organic honey collected from bees that feast on unsprayed wildflowers

·      skin food serum for dry skin : contains emu oil which is derived from the fat of the emu bird. we ethically source emu oil where the birds are totally free range. they feed on an all-natural diet which includes natural plants with antibiotic properties. no growth hormones or medicines are used and they are not fed corn, meat meal or hydrogenated oil feed. nearly all parts of the bird are used and they will thrive only under humane conditions. the emus actually improve the land on which they are raised. all the natural fatty acids are preserved by low temperature refining processes and refrigerated storage.

do you test on animals?

no way, josé.

are your products gluten free?

why didn't I receive a printed receipt with my order?

the earth provides us with all we need to exist and asks for nothing in return. we are all part of the environment and what we do to the environment, we also do to ourselves, as well as to our future generations. we are conscious of this with everything we do at P+R and not printing receipts is just one of the many steps we take in our everyday lives to ensure the survival of our living planet.

who did your branding?

it took a village to bring Pure + Radiant to your face:

ellen irvin [courtney’s “little” from ko jo kai at abilene christian university] : she read courtney’s initial blog posts and couldn’t help but encourage her to turn her hobby into a business. with branding and marketing experience + love for entrepreneurship, ellen consulted with courtney to help build the Pure + Radiant brand. this early collaboration is what became the inspiration for P + R. ellen and our friend, calli gutknecht, designed this entire website! they deserve a round of applause!

brandon kahla [courtney’s husband] : provided his business expertise but most importantly has supported this dream and made it a reality! Pure + Radiant couldn’t have been birthed without him!

who did your photography?

almost all our website photos were shot by shelby tsika. she specializes in both product shots, weddings, and portraits. go see more of her work at http://www.shelbytsikaphotography.com. we cannot recommend her highly enough!

taking care of your skin // FAQ

where do I start?

click here. we would love to guide you through the process of choosing which products will serve your skin best.

what are some things I should be mindful of for acne care?

the majority of faces come to us with skin overstressed, highly-sensitized and exhausted.

too often, those with troubled or acne-prone skin overcompensate by aggressively scrubbing, washing several times per day, and experimenting with a mountain of products.

though it’s tempting to layer on the newest “acne-fighting” solutions available, we believe addressing the core-issue is most important to truly fighting inflammation.

there are truly wonderful options in skincare to help address and make a serious impact on acne – but we believe radiant and clear skin will require making choices that are good for the whole body and self, giving the space for skin to balance and heal from within.

I have acne on my cheeks. what tips do you have for that?

patchiness or discoloration on the cheeks can indicate poor metabolism and low absorption of nutrients, such as folate and iron. additionally, cheeks are linked to lung function (think about how red your face gets during a strenuous workout that has you breathing hard), so pay attention to your quality of breath and consider breathing exercises.

it's also important to note that acne on the cheeks might be caused by a dirty cell phone and pillowcases, or a tendency to touch your face frequently. make sure to keep your hands away from your face, and accessories and sheets clean.

which products can I use to conquer my blackheads?

our bare + grain it scrub and clear as mud mask are the two powerhouses that will help with blackheads.

the scrub will remove the dry and dead cells on the skin's top layer, loosening and clearing toxin and impurity buildup, leaving skin invigorated and refreshed!

the mask will expel toxins and bind to bacteria on the skin's surface and within pores for complete extraction. it also pulls excess hydrogen from cells, making room for oxygen to take its place which increases self-repair.

what do you recommend for cystic acne?

whatever you do, don't pop your cystic acne or any other pimples for that matter! you can apply an ice cube directly to the breakout for several seconds to constrict the small blood vessels feeding the painful cyst.

it's important to maintain a simple, calming skin care routine that avoids heavy moisturizers and making sure your skin is thoroughly exfoliated and clean! something you might not think about is what else touches your face daily, like towels and pillowcases. maybe look into the laundry detergent you're using and try using a new towels every day to reduce the contamination, making your acne worse.

since our skin is often a window into our digestive system, foods to eat to help combat cystic acne include probiotic rich foods, zinc rich foods, vitamin a rich foods, fiber rich foods, high quality protein and liver supportive foods.

do you have any additional tips for dry skin?

one tip that's really been saving our skin in cold weather, is to massage a generous amount of skin food serum into skin and place a warm damp cloth over after the gently steam and lock in the benefits. then add an extra drop of skin food serum after to seal the deal.

also, quit using a towel after showering. keep your serum in the shower and moisturize within 30 seconds of turning the shower off to seal in the water that's already on your skin.

and of course, don't be afraid to reapply throughout the day. we like to refer to our skin food serum as green juice for your skin because your skin will literally drink it in. your skin rejuvenates at night so applying more serum at night than in the morning will help as well.

what would you recommend for anti-aging?

when it comes to 'anti-aging', we think it's important to first take a step back and fix our mindset. there is power in embracing our bodies and faces as we age. behind every fine line and wrinkle, there is wisdom and years of laughter. we like to call this 'aging gracefully'.

it's also important to note that certain foods (such as alcohol and caffeine) speed up the aging process.

our skin food serum for mature skin has 3 powerful ingredients:  organic cold pressed jojoba oil, organic cold pressed argan oil, and organic 100% pure therapeutic grade frankincense essential oil. click here and scroll to the bottom of the product page to read not only what ingredients we use and their quality, but why we use them and what purpose they will serve for your skin. this is a great start when trying to figure out which products will currently benefit you most.

what would you recommend for melasma?

our skin food serum for normal skin contains organic cold pressed rosehip oil which will tackle UV ray damage while upgrading tone, texture and skin pigmentation. this serum also stimulates collagen production and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

what would you recommend for facial rosacea?

our skin food serum for normal skin is a credible remedy for facial rosacea because it aids in removing redness and irritation.

can your products help with broken capillaries?

as we age, especially for fair-skinned individuals we find more broken capillaries on our face, in particular our cheeks, nose and décolleté area. these happen for a variety of reasons, from thin skin, extreme weather, and hot baths to sitting too long. as a result, the cells in the capillary walls become weak and lose their elasticity.

some factors that cause capillaries to dilate in the face are hot baths and showers, hot facials, scrubbing face too vigorously, sun and alcohol.

our skin food serum for normal skin or our skin food serum for mature skin would both be beneficial for reducing broken capillaries. the vitamin c in the rosehip oil in our skin food serum for normal skin is extremely good for strengthening walls of veins.

what do you recommend for hormonal acne?

the very first blog post courtney wrote when she launched the Pure + Radiant blog was about the hormonal acne she experienced 3 months before her wedding (read here).

breakouts on the chin are most likely where hormonal imbalances and stress will make themselves known, which means you're more likely to break out there around your menstrual cycle. reducing stress as much as possible, getting adequate sleep and exercising will help heal blemishes around this area.

since hormonal imbalance is the underlying cause, we would definitely recommend working with a functional medicine doctor.

the right products make a serious difference, but the key is major unwavering consistency. caused by bacteria that lives on our skin, acne comes to life when our hormones produce excess oil, essentially throwing fuel on the fire. add dead skin cells, dirt, stress that can cause further oil production, irritation from everything from diet to skin products, and a breakout is going to result unless you (constantly) work to prevent it.

our skin food serum for oily skin contains 3 powerful ingredients:  organic cold pressed hemp seed oil, organic cold pressed evening primrose oil, and organic 100% therapeutic grade lemon essential oil. we usually say, "all hail the hormone healer" because evening primrose oil can help reduce oiliness by modulating the sebum production while lemon essential oil limits overactive sebaceous glands and reduces excessive oil on the skin. it's a powerful antioxidant responsible for acne-reduction, damage-restore and skin-hydration.

what can I do for those annoying little bumps on my skin?

those are called comedones. in other words, they are what comes right before the painful red acne spot.

starting out with jojoba oil can sometimes bring breakouts because it has very little linoleic acid, although very beneficial for the skin. we recommend skin food serum for normal skin. it has 3 powerful ingredients:  organic cold pressed sweet almond oil, organic cold pressed rosehip oil, organic 100% therapeutic grade ylang ylang essential oil.

what would you recommend for enlarged pores?

our clear as mud mask expels toxins and extracts bacteria from within pores while pulling excess hydrogen from cells, making room for oxygen which increases self-repair. it also has the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity and defense mechanisms against bacteria blemishes and aging blotches.

what do you recommend for sebaceous hyperplasia?

let's first take a look at possible underlying causes to your sebaceous hyperplasia:  weak immune system, aging, acne, excessive exposure to the sun, or hormone imbalance.

we recommend working with a functional medicine doctor to get to the root cause and start healing this inflammation there.

now, to support your skin through healing:  apple cider vinegar has the power to balance your skin's pH so you can keep your sebaceous glands in check. it works great for both treating and preventing sebaceous hyperplasia. we recommend mop toner for sensitive skin. also, lemon essential oil has powerful antiseptic properties and acts as an astringent. it will act by leveling out the oil that your skin produces so you can treat and prevent this condition. we recommend suds face wash and skin food serum for oily skin (both contain lemon essential oil) to work synergistically with your body in healing this condition.

SUDS face wash // FAQ

does suds face wash remove makeup?

suds face wash removes light makeup and the daily grime.

we don’t recommend it for removing eye makeup or heavy foundation.

for eye makeup, we recommend the oil cleansing method.

what is double cleansing?

following the oil cleansing method, use a small amount of suds face wash and cleanse the face using circular motions for one full minute, using your fingertips or a konjac cleansing sponge. be sure to include your throat, jaw line area + behind your ears and do a little more time on your t-zone area since it tends to produce more oil. rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

using lukewarm water, rinse your face thoroughly, even the jawline, hairline, throat and nose, which are often neglected spots. don't pat dry. to help lock in moisture, apply skin food serum immediately. freshly cleansed skin is primed to receive the maximum benefits of the active ingredients, so this is the perfect time to apply skin food serum. be sure to include your neck, décolleté and the back of your hands.

should I use suds face wash every day? what are the main benefits?

suds face wash gently cleanses and helps shed dead and dehydrated skin. this stimulating treatment transforms + refines skin’s appearance – addressing issues of uneven skin tone and discoloration, dryness and flakiness, oil imbalances and acne. I would begin by using every other day, increasing as your skin adjusts. we recommend cleansing with suds face wash in the evening and sweeping + prepping for skin food serum with mop toner in the mornings.

what are some of your face washing secrets?

·      change your pillowcase every three to four days if you wash your face every night. change your pillowcase everyday if you’re not washing your face every night!

·      wash your face with warm water and suds face wash, then skip drying your skin with a towel. immediately apply skin food serum to lock in moisture.

SKIN FOOD serum // FAQ

what are facial serums?

facial serums are lightweight moisturizers that contain a concentrated amount of nourishing ingredients. typically, facial serums are a mixture of high-quality oils + extracts with antioxidant + anti-inflammatory + hydrating properties.

facial serums are best applied to clean skin and can be applied both in the a.m. and p.m. depending on your needs. when following a natural skincare routine, facial serum should be applied after cleanser and toner.

serums are phenomenal for improving lipid barrier function, decreasing dryness, and adding a bit of additional moisturizer to the face post-cleanse.

no matter your skin type, we recommend a patch test on your arm before applying it to your entire face.

is it okay to use an oil-based facial serum if I have dry/oily skin?

YES!

dry skin occurs when our skin lacks appropriate oil, resulting in rough, dry, or flaky skin. applying nourishing oils topically helps restore the lipid barrier, which reduces water loss, inhibits peroxidative and oxidative damage, and improves antimicrobial function on the surface of the skin.

if your skin overproduces oil, applying nourishing oils can also help to exfoliate skin because it breaks up and dissolves excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural lipid barrier. It also helps to restore lipid barrier function, which can help your skin regulate oil production.

is skin food serum for oily skin safe for daytime use? I heard that citrus oils could be photosensitizing.

when utilizing citrus oils in any formulation, special care must be paid to respecting the proper balance of ratios to protect against potential heightened photosensitivity. we include only the highest quality oils in our blends and pair any citrus with other naturally sun protective and healing ingredients for extra assurance of safety and efficacy.

if you are especially prone to sun sensitivity, or are taking any medications that may increase your risk, go ahead and indulge in skin food serum for oily skin as your night ritual, rotating with either skin food serum for normal or mature skin for daytime use.

should skin food serum be refrigerated?

if you struggle with erythema or rosacea, chill your moisturizer both day and night to help calm skin instantly when applied. it’s like having a cold compress on the skin.

why do you use emu oil in skin food serum for dry skin?

emu oil penetrates through all 7 layers of skin! it doesn't clog pores, has anti-inflammatory + skin proliferative properties. emu oil is a non-polar monounsaturated fatty acid which means it has the ability to move through cells easily. it has short chain fatty acids, like most animal fats, but acts like a long chair fatty acid, like most plant oils.

it is believed emus need the therapeutic properties in their fat to help their bodies heal quickly from injuries. they fight heavily during breeding season and have evolved to heal efficiently. these healing properties are believed to transfer to any human or animal tissues the oil is applied to.

are people allergic to emu oil?

emu oil is considered very hypoallergenic. allergic reactions are extremely rare since the fatty acid profile in the oil is similar to our skin cell profile. emu oil has more in common with olive oil than an animal fat with the exception of the therapeutic properties. although olive oil contains high levels of oleic acid it is in an inactive form. the oleic acids in emu oil are extremely active.

CLEAR AS MUD mask // FAQ

should clear as mud be refrigerated?

yes, for an extra cooling and soothing effect, keep clear as mud mask in the refrigerator!

when should I mask?

it may seem like a good idea to apply a face mask before you shower so you can wash it off easily when you get into the tub (rather than making a mess around your sink), but apply clear as mud mask after you shower. the warm water from your shower will create steam, which will open your pores. this will soften the dirt already in there, making it easier for the gunk to leave your skin. it also makes your face more susceptible to all the good ingredients in clear as mud mask.

how should I remove it?

we’ve all been in that situation where we leave a mask on for a little bit too long and it dries into a hard, impossible-to-remove mass of dried clay. so first thing’s first:  don’t leave clear as mud mask on too long. when the time comes to wash it off, lukewarm water is key. cold water won’t be effective at breaking down the product, but using water that’s too hot will dry out and aggravate your skin.

remember, your pores aren’t capable of safely withstanding extreme temperatures, so opt for room temperature water when it comes to removing a mask. you can also use a gentle, clean cloth for some extra help if necessary.

what should I apply to my skin directly after masking?

a toner. most people know how important it is to moisturize after using a mask, but adding toner to the mix is an equally important – but often overlooked – step. mop toner will help your skin lock in all the benefits of the mask, which in turn will keep your skin smoother + younger. additionally, it’ll help whatever moisturizer you use after (hopefully skin food serum) penetrate deeper.

BARE + GRAIN IT scrub // FAQ

why should I exfoliate?

chances are if you don’t exfoliate weekly, your skin is covered in dead skin cells that are mucking up the surface of your skin and causing your skin to not only look dull, but older. without proper exfoliation, foundation won’t smooth over your skin cleanly and moisturizer won’t properly soak in.

how do you exfoliate?

massage bare + grain it scrub over your skin gently using the tips of your fingers. the key to effective exfoliation is a gentle touch – use circular motions to really get the scrub down into your pores. don’t press too hard with your fingers or you can scratch the skin. you must also avoid getting the salt near the eyes and mouth areas. rinse the salt solution off using lukewarm water, pat your skin dry, and admire your freshly scrubbed, glowing skin!

when’s the best time to exfoliate?

in the a.m.

our skin repairs itself at night therefore the morning is the perfect time for scrubbing away those dead skin cells.

MOP toner // FAQ

why use a toner?

the skin has a very delicate acid mantle that normally has a pH of around 5. cleansers are typically more alkaline (have a pH above 7), which can disrupt the acid mantle on the skin for up to 16 hours. when the acid mantle is disrupted, it promotes abnormal bacteria growth, and our skin becomes more susceptible to diseases, infections, and even wrinkles long-term. toners, which are more acidic (a pH of around 3-4) restore the skin to its natural pH.

because our skin’s delicate pH can be disrupted by many factors including stress, our diet, lack of exercise and dehydration – a natural acidic toner, like mop toner, can be very beneficial for balancing the skin. in addition, mop toner will freshen + remove excess oils and make-up that may have been left behind after using suds face wash or performing natural techniques like the oil-cleansing method.

why apple cider vinegar?

apple cider vinegar (ACV) is simply the by-product of the fermentation of apples. apples are loaded with potassium, pectin, malic acid and calcium. the fermentation process results with even more beneficial acids and enzymes.

mop toner, made of unfiltered apple cider vinegar balances the natural pH of the skin, clears away excess oils and make-up and exfoliates dead skin cells to keep skin pores open. it also can lighten sun and age spots + improve acne and scars. now that’s what’s up.

why are raw and unfiltered important?

"raw" means the vinegar is unpasteurized and still retains all its original healthy properties.

we only use apple cider vinegar that still contains "the mother" – the enzymes with which the vinegar is made. using unfiltered ACV in our products socks your skin with a load of vitamins and trace minerals to provide maximum health benefits.

should mop be refrigerated?

put your toner in the fridge for a refreshing skin treat, especially in the summer! this precious jolt of a chill will awaken the senses and tighten pores.

why is my lid rusting?

uh oh! please know we're well aware of the problem and researching other sustainable options.

we at P + R are committed to using the most natural sources available – including our product packaging. at this time, we are willing to sacrifice the convenience of a plastic lid to preserve the potency of the apple cider vinegar.

bpa in plastic leeches to apple cider vinegar because the acidic nature of apple cider vinegar breaks it down easier and faster. further, plastic contains other petroleum-based chemicals that will leech to the apple cider vinegar-based toner.
